‘Sharknado’ franchise returns with prequel ‘Sharknado Origins’

Los Angeles, Nov 16 (UNI) The cult-favorite Sharknado franchise—believed to have ended in 2018 after six gloriously chaotic sequels—is officially making a comeback with a new installment titled Sharknado Origins, Variety reported.
Produced by The Asylum—the studio behind the original low-budget hit about tornadoes flinging sharks onto Los Angeles, ‘Sharknado Origins’ is slated to begin production later this year, with director Anthony Ferrante returning to the helm. Casting details are expected to be announced soon, with a summer 2026 release planned.
As the title indicates, the film is a prequel set before 2013’s original Sharknado. It will follow a teenage Fin (originally played by Ian Ziering) and April (originally Tara Reid) as they meet during a perfect beach summer.
Sparks fly between them, but just as Fin is about to propose with a promise ring, the skies darken, a massive tornado forms, and sharks erupt dramatically from the ocean.
The Sharknado series went on to produce six sequels, including Sharknado 2: The Second One, which drew the franchise’s largest audience of around 3.9 million viewers, followed by Sharknado 3: Oh Hell No!, Sharknado: The 4th Awakens, Sharknado 5: Global Swarming, and 2018’s The Last Sharknado, according to Variety.
