AAP MLA Manjinder Singh Lalpura faces setback as HC denies stay on conviction in assault case

Chandigarh, Nov 18 (UNI) AAP MLA from Khadoor Sahib, Manjinder Singh Lalpura, has suffered a major setback after the Punjab and Haryana High Court refused to stay his conviction in a decade-old assault and molestation case. With the petition dismissed, his only legal remedy now lies with the Supreme Court. The court's detailed order is still awaited.
Two months ago, a Tarn Taran district court held Lalpora and 11 others guilty of assaulting and molesting a young woman. The incident dates back to 2013, when Lalpora, then working as a taxi driver, was accused of misbehaving with a woman attending a wedding function. On September 12, the trial court sentenced all 12 convicts, including Lalpora, to four years' imprisonment. Seven of them, including the MLA, were arrested during the investigation.
The verdict also found five police personnel, Davinder Kumar, Saraj Singh, Ashwani Kumar, Tarsem Singh, and Harjinder Singh guilty in the case.
