AID calls upon central Govt to expedite SEZ Act amendments

Nagpur, Aug 13 (UNI) The Association for Industrial Development (AID), conceptualised by Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, has urged the Government of India to expedite the implementation of proposed amendments to the Special Economic Zones (SEZ) Act and Rules, a press release from AID said.
In a representation addressed to Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal, AID President Ashish Kale emphasised that while SEZ units currently enjoy tax benefits on exports, they face full customs duties, including IGST, when selling goods in the Domestic Tariff Area (DTA). This high tax burden makes SEZ products less competitive in the Indian market.
The proposed changes, recently discussed under Goyal’s chairmanship with industry stakeholders, include a provision to permit “duty forgone” based sales to the DTA, calculated only on the imported raw materials used rather than on the entire finished product.
