AMD reports ‘RDSEED’ failure on its Zen 5 processors

New Delhi, Nov 3 (UNI) US-based IT organization Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) reported ‘RDSEED’ failure on its Zen 5 processors, an official AMD blog said.
An ‘RDSEED Failure’ occurs when the CPU’s RDSEED instruction, which is designed to provide high-quality random numbers from a hardware entropy source.
On the other hand, Zen 5 processors refer to AMD’s next-generation CPU architecture, which is powering both desktop as well as mobile chips.
The blog said, “ AMD was notified of a bug in ‘Zen 5 processors’ that may cause the RDSEED instruction to return zero at a rate inconsistent with randomness while incorrectly signalling success, indication a potential misclassification of failure as a success. This issue was publicly reported via the Linux kernel mailing list and was not submitted through AMD’s Coordinated Vulnerability Disclosure (CVD) process.”
“AMD has determined that the 16-bit and 32-bit forms of the RDSEED instruction on ‘Zen 5 processors’ are affected. The 64-bit form of RDSEED is not affected. AMD plans to release mitigations for this vulnerability,” it added.
AMD has specialized in developing central processing units (CPUs), graphics processing units (GPUs), field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs), system-on-chips (SoCs), and high-performance computer components.
The company serves as a wide range of business and consumer markets, including gaming, data centres, artificial intelligence (AI), and embedded systems.
