Amidst Corona scare, Flood situation turns grave in Assam

Guwahati, Jul 12 (UNI) Amidst Coronavirus scare, flood situation in Assam has turned grave with reports coming from various districts of breach of embankments caused by incessant rains and release of dam water in various places.
More than 20 districts of the state has come under the grip of rising waters which has affected more than 6 lakh people and claimed 42 lives till Saturday. Barpeta district in Lower Assam and Dhemaji in Upper Assam were worst affected as more than 1.28 lakh people in both districts have been affected or have been displaced from their homes. In low lying areas, flood waters have entered the homes in many areas destroying everything. The torrential rains have worsened the flood situation with the weather department forecasting more rains in coming days.
The Central Water Commission (CWC) in its regular bulletin said that 14 stations are under severe flood situation and 9 stations are flowing in above normal flood situation in Assam.
The Brahmaputra is flowing above the danger level in more than 20 places across the state. Few parts of the famed Kaziranga National Park is also inundated by the flood waters. A total of 46 camps, out of 223 at Kaziranga National Park, and six out of 40 camps at Rajiv Gandhi Orang National Park have been affected by the deluge. Rising waters have also claimed the lives of 48 animals in Kaziranga.
Meanwhile, overnight rains in the capital town Guwahati has thrown life out of gear with flash floods witnessed in various localities of the city which caused a lot of trouble for the residents.
