Apple growers, farmers call for Shimla Secretariat 'gherao' on July 29

Shimla, July 15 (UNI) Mounting anger among apple growers and farmers over the recent eviction drive in Himachal Pradesh’s Kotkhai region has sparked a statewide protest call.
On Monday, the Himachal Pradesh Seb Utpadak Sangh (SUS) and the Himachal Kisan Sabha announced a mass mobilization — “Shimla Chalo” — and a Secretariat 'gherao' on July 29, against the axing of apple orchards on forest land under the ongoing court-monitored encroachment removal operation.
A meeting was convened today at Hatkoti in Jubbal tehsil, attended by over 250 apple growers from the Rohru, Jubbal-Nawar-Kotkhai, and Chopal constituencies. Notable participants included former Theog MLA Rakesh Singha, former Shimla Mayor Sanjay Chauhan, and SUS President Sohan Lal Thakur. The speakers termed the eviction drive and felling of decades-old apple trees as a direct “attack on Himachaliyat,” and resolved to intensify agitation if the government fails to halt the action.
