Bharat Pavilion opens at Cannes Film Festival

Cannes, May 14 (UNI) The Bharat Pavilion at the Cannes Film Festival has been thrown open to the global entertainment industry with the country's filmmaking community showcasing India's civilisational storytelling economy built on the strength of linguistic and regional diversity.
Bollywood actor Alia Bhatt led India's film industry representatives at the inauguration of the Bharat Pavilion on May 13, the day of the opening of the Cannes Film Market, considered the largest of its kind in the world.
Situated on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea, India's country pavilion is a highlight of the Cannes Film Market, the scene of buying and selling of new films from around the world.
The Bharat Pavilion, the window to India and Indian cinema, is an initiative of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (I & B) and operated by the National Film Development Corporation (NFDC) in partnership with the industry chamber, the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FICCI).
"The Bharat Pavilion is a statement of intent. It says India is ready for the future," said I & B Secretary Chanchal Kumar, who delivered the keynote address at the inauguration of the pavilion, stressing on the significance of India as a major global content hub.
"Co-produce in India, post-produce in India and shoot films in India," Secretary Kumar said, inviting international productions to the country, the largest filmmaking national in the world.
"India has a strong openness to diverse cinematic voices from across the world," he added.
India's entertainment industry was valued at dollars 32 billion (approximately Rs 3.06 trillion) last year, recording 9.1 per cent growth over the previous year.
Last year, Mumbai hosted the World Audio Visual and Entertainment Summit (WAVES) inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, underlining the country's significance as a global content hub.
The poster and trailer of the 57th edition of the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Panaji, Goa, which will be held during November 20-28, and an India Film Guide were unveiled on the occasion.
Acclaimed actor-director Ashutosh Gowariker, the director of IFFI, Goa, was among those who were present at the inauguration of the Bharat Pavilion.
Christian Jeune, Deputy General Delegate of the Cannes Film Festival, and NFDC Managing Director Prakash Magdum were among the prominent speakers on the occasion, attended by industry representatives from around the world.
The Bharat Pavilion, which showcases India as a global hub for content creation, will host a series of talks and seminars to promote the country's creative economy.
The Cannes Film Market is being held from May 14 to 23.
