New Delhi, Jun 10 (UNI) Equity mutual fund inflows declined sharply by 40 per cent to Rs 22,908 crore in May, compared with Rs 38,440 crore in April, according to monthly data released by the Association of Mutual Funds in India (AMFI). Despite the slowdown, equity funds continued to attract fresh investments for the fourth consecutive month.
Systematic Investment Plan (SIP) contributions remained relatively resilient, standing at Rs 30,954 crore in May, marginally lower than Rs 31,115 crore recorded in April. SIP inflows remained above the Rs 30,000-crore mark for the third straight month, indicating continued investor participation through regular investment routes despite a moderation in overall equity flows.
The broader mutual fund industry witnessed pressure during the month, led by a sharp reversal in debt mutual funds. Debt schemes recorded net outflows of Rs 96,949 crore in May after receiving inflows of Rs 2.47 lakh crore in April, making it the biggest contributor to overall industry outflows.
Gold ETFs also slipped into the negative zone, registering net outflows of Rs 725 crore in May against inflows of Rs 3,040 crore in April. The category had earlier witnessed strong investor interest, with inflows crossing Rs 24,000 crore in January.
Hybrid funds continued to attract investors, although inflows moderated to Rs 10,560 crore in May from Rs 20,565 crore in April.
Among equity categories, flexi-cap funds saw inflows nearly halve to Rs 5,176 crore from Rs 10,148 crore in the previous month. Sectoral and thematic funds witnessed an even sharper decline, with inflows falling nearly 67 per cent to Rs 648 crore.
However, investor appetite for mid-cap and small-cap funds remained intact. Mid-cap funds attracted Rs 4,385 crore, while small-cap funds received Rs 4,946 crore during the month. Together, the two categories accounted for over Rs 9,300 crore of fresh investments, highlighting continued interest in growth-oriented equity segments.
The data suggests that while investors reduced fresh lump-sum allocations amid market uncertainty, disciplined SIP investments and select equity categories continued to see steady participation.
