Paris, Aug 9 (UNI) A resolution is anticipated before the conclusion of the Olympic Games as the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) prepares to make a crucial ruling in the case of Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat.
Phogat, who was disqualified from the Women’s Freestyle 50kg gold medal match after a failed second weigh-in, is challenging the decision made by United World Wrestling (UWW).
The controversy erupted on August 7, just hours before Phogat’s highly anticipated final match. The UWW’s decision to replace her due to the weigh-in failure led Phogat to immediately file an appeal with the CAS Ad hoc Division at 16:45 CEST.
Phogat's initial request sought to overturn the decision and allow a new weigh-in, but the urgency of the situation made it impossible for CAS to issue a ruling before the match, which was set for 18:15 CEST that same day.
Now, as the Olympic Games draw to a close, Phogat has adjusted her appeal, seeking a shared silver medal as the CAS proceedings continue. The hearing, scheduled for today, is being overseen by the Dr. Annabelle Bennett from Australia, who is acting as the sole arbitrator in the high-profile case.
The case has garnered significant attention from the global wrestling community and sports enthusiasts, highlighting the intense pressures athletes face during major international competitions.
As the CAS deliberates on Phogat’s appeal, the outcome could set an important precedent for the resolution of disputes in Olympic sports. The final decision is expected soon, and it will undoubtedly be a defining moment in the Paris 2024 Games. UNI BDN SSP
