Cure for cancer is biggest challenge: Dr Purohit

Guntur (Andhra Pradesh), Feb 4 (UNI) National Cancer Control Programme (NCCP) Advisor Dr Naresh Purohit on Saturday said the cure for cancer is the biggest challenge as nine lakh people die every day due to the disease in India.
Talking to UNI after addressing in a seminar on "War on Cancer" organised by the Guntur based NATCO cancer center on the occasion of World Cancer Day today, Dr Purohit, who is also the preventive Oncology Expert and Principal Investigator for the Association of studies for cancer care, said that incidence of cancer in India is estimated to be 1.5 to three times higher than reported incidence as 51 per cent patients take more than a week to conclude diagnosis while 46 per cent take second opinion due to lack of confidence in initial diagnosis and suggested treatment.
"As per Indian Cancer Registry, India is faced with a sizable cancer incidence burden, which continues to grow exponentially. There will be about 800,000 new cancer cases in India every year,"he said.
