CW Championship double medallist fencer Bhavani Devi accorded rousing reception

Chennai, Aug 15 (UNI) Tamil Nadu's CA.Bhavani Devi, who won a gold
and a bronze in the Commonwealth Championship in London (UK), was
accorded a rousing reception on her arrival at the Chennai airport here
today.
This is the second Gold won by her in the CW Worlds in the individual event
defeating Australia's Vasileva Veronica in the finals 15-10.
Earlier, Bhavani had won the gold in the 2018 edition and adding to it
she won two more in London this time--a gold and a bronze (team event),
bringing laurels to India, especially her home state of Tamil Nadu.
The first woman fencer from India to participate in the Tokyo Olympics,
was received at the airport by SDAT authorities on her arrival from London,
sportspersons, friends and fmaily members.
Talking to reporters, she thanked the Tamil Nadu Government, her family
members, SDAT and her employer TNEB for all the support extended by
them, which motivated her to win two medals in the CW Championship
this year.
Stating that her aim was to win a gold in the next Olympics in Paris, Bhavani
said she would be training hard to achieve this goal, by qualifying for the
event--participating in nearly 12 qualifying events , starting from April next
year.
Noting that the sport of fencing was becoming popular in INdia, she thanked the
Fencing Federation, Union govern, ent for their unstinted support and recalled the
fencing event held in New Delhi for the first time, in which a lot of fencers took part.
It's a big thing for India that 12 fencers from India took part in the Saber event in the
recent World Cup in Turkey, which was a good sign that the sport was developing in
the country, with the support of the Central and State governments.
