Cynosure to launch electric operated four-wheeler from Hooghly district this year

Kolkata, Sep 6 (UNI) 17 years after Ratan Tata announced withdrawal of Nano car company from Singur in Hooghly district, Cynosure announced launching of electric operated four-wheeler from Sugandha in Hooghly district – just 17 kilometres away of Singur.

On Saturday, electric vehicle manufacturer Cynosure declared that it would roll out a four-wheeler priced below Rs 1 lakh from Hooghly.

The announcement came during the launch of the company’s electric three-wheeler in Kolkata, where officials revealed that the prototype of the four-wheeler would be unveiled after Diwali, with the commercial launch scheduled for January 2026.

The company’s co-founder, Sampurna Ghosh, said the upcoming car would run entirely on battery power and could seat four passengers including the driver.

“Our dream is to make personal cars affordable for the middle and lower-middle-class families. The price will be below Rs 1 lakh,” she said, adding that the final name of the car had not yet been decided.

She also hinted that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s blessings would guide them in the naming process.

Saturday’s event was attended by state ministers Javed Ahmed Khan and Ujjal Biswas, as well as Trinamool Congress leader and former Rajya Sabha MP Kunal Ghosh.

The timing is significant. If Cynosure keeps to its schedule, the car will hit the roads just months before the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections.

Seventeen years ago, Tata Motors had withdrawn its Nano car project from Singur after completing 80 percent of the factory, citing political unrest.

Ratan Tata, who announced the decision in Kolkata on Mahashtami of Durga Puja 2008, had blamed then opposition leader Mamata Banerjee for the agitation over land acquisition. The project later shifted to Sanand in Gujarat.

Although Mamata Banerjee repeatedly clarified after becoming Chief Minister that her protest was not against Tata but against the land acquisition policy of the Left government, the Nano episode left a lasting mark in Bengal’s industrial history.

Now, with Cynosure’s plan to build a low-cost electric four-wheeler from Hooghly — barely 17 kilometres from Singur — history seems to be coming full circle.

For Mamata Banerjee, too, a car for the masses from the same district ahead of the 2026 polls could carry powerful political symbolism.
