Defamation law inadequate for YouTube menace: Karnataka HC

Bengaluru, Sept 3 (UNI) The Karnataka High Court today orally observed that existing defamation laws are insufficient to tackle the "YouTube menace" and suggested that the criminal defamation case filed by Minister KJ George against Kannada Prabha Editor-in-Chief Ravi Hegde could be resolved if a disclaimer is published.
Justice MI Arun, hearing Hegde’s plea to quash the proceedings, said a disclaimer clarifying that the report was based on statements of others and not endorsed by the editor, along with an expression of regret if it hurt anyone, could pave the way for closure of the case.
The Court remarked that editors carry a greater responsibility in publishing reports, but also acknowledged that defamatory news tends to hurt "good persons" rather than wrongdoers. It suggested that both parties explore settlement or mediation before proceeding further.
