Delhi sets up bamboo cooling shelters as heatwave intensifies

New Delhi, June 8: As temperatures continue to soar across the Capital, the Delhi government has begun setting up eco-friendly cooling shelters aimed at providing relief to people exposed to extreme heat, particularly outdoor workers and other vulnerable groups.
Two bamboo-based cooling zones are currently operational in Bawana and Alipur, while work on three additional shelters is underway, including one outside the Deputy Commissioner's office in Outer North Delhi, officials said.
The initiative forms part of the government's Heat Action Plan, which seeks to reduce the health risks associated with prolonged exposure to high temperatures. Delhi has witnessed recurring heatwave conditions in recent summers, prompting authorities to explore measures beyond conventional cooling infrastructure.
