Delhi stun Goa 2-0

Panaji, Oct 13 (UNI) Delhi earned full three points by beating Goa 2-0 in the opening quarterfinal league match of the Junior National Football Championship for Girls U-18 played at Sports complex Navelim in south Goa today. While, in another match played at Panchayat Ground Raia also in south Goa, Odisha defeated Mizoram 3-1. In the Goa-Delhi tie, Goa entered the match as the clear favourites having had impressive wins in their group stage matches. Delhi, however, entered the match with a plan of their own and stuck by a very gritty effort and disciplined play for the entire 90 minutes duration to thump the hosts, 2-0. Goa were a little unlucky on a couple of occasions with the ball hitting the crossbar twice, which seemed like definite goals for Goa. Meghna Arora scored the first goal for Delhi in the 43rd minute and Delhi went into the half-time break with a slender lead of 1-0. Goa kept pushing hard for an equaliser but their key players, Velanie Fernandes, Cianna Lobo and Anline Fernandes, were marked brilliantly by the Delhi defence on a one-on-one strategic game play. The Delhi team did not give much room for Goa midfielders to create plays and minimised the goal scoring opportunities for the Goan forwards. As Goa went ahead in trying to find an equaliser, it started creating big gaps in their defence. Delhi made a nice counter-attack move and scored a second goal against Goa in the 78th minute from their India team international player Anushka Samuel. The second goal dampened the spirits of Goan girls and the match ended with the final score of 2-0 in favour of Delhi. All is not lost for Goa and they still stand a strong chance of making it into the semi-finals, if they overcome a strong Odisha side and a gritty and talented Mizoram side in their next two quarter-final league matches.
