Draw to decide reservation for Mumbai mayoral post on January 22 , ST quota could tilt advantage away from ruling Mahayuti

Mumbai, Jan 21 (UNI) Political temperatures are rising in Mumbai ahead of the draw that will decide the reservation category for the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation mayoral post, scheduled to be held on January 22 by the Urban Development Department.
Speculation within political circles has intensified over the possibility of the Mayor’s post being reserved for the Scheduled Tribe category. Such an outcome could significantly alter the power balance within the BMC, despite the ruling Mahayuti alliance holding a numerical majority in the House.
The BMC has a total strength of 227 corporators, with 114 required to elect the mayor. The Bharatiya Janata Party has emerged as the single largest party with 89 seats, while its ally, the Shinde-led Shiv Sena, holds 29 seats. Together, the Mahayuti commands 118 corporators, comfortably above the majority mark. If three corporators of the NCP (Ajit Pawar faction) which is part of the ruling coalition in the state, but contested separately, are added, then the Mahayuti will have support of 121 corporators.
