Robert Downey Jr. reflects on short-lived SNL stint

Chicago, Jan 20 (UNI) Renowned actor Robert Downey Jr., celebrated for his powerful and versatile performances, has revisited his early days in the entertainment industry as part of the new four-part docuseries SNL50: Beyond Saturday Night.
The "Iron Man" star reflects on his brief tenure on Saturday Night Live (SNL) during its 1985-1986 season, an experience that, while challenging, proved to be crucial in shaping his identity as a performer.
“I learned so much in that year about what I wasn’t. But there’s not a more exciting 90 minutes you could have, whether you are any good or not,” Downey commented.
Back then, Downey was only 20 when he made entry into SNL, which was facilitated by close friend Anthony Michael Hall, who was also cast during the same season.
Hall, then only 27, became the youngest performer in the show's history and admitted the writers struggled to create material for someone his age. “I think — for a lot of the writers to figure out how to write for this kid — I think it was a big challenge”, according to a report by PEOPLE.
Season 11, which included stars like Joan Cusack, Damon Wayans, Randy Quaid, Jon Lovitz and Al Franken. However, the season is widely considered one of the show’s weakest by SNL fans and critics, and many of the cast members were replaced by season 12. Creator Lorne Michaels reflected on his decision to rejuvenate the cast.
“I wanted to go younger,” SNL creator Lorne Michaels said of the season during the same docuseries. “I perhaps went too young, but I wanted to go younger. The Baby Boomer generation had dominated the show for 10 years, so I decided to clean house.”
Despite the rocky season and his subsequent departure, Downey's career blossomed. From earning critical acclaim for roles like Chaplin to redefining superhero cinema with Iron Man.
His wife, producer Susan Downey, emphasised his commitment to mentoring emerging talent. "If he sees a performance he likes, he will go out of his way to get ahold of that person, especially anyone young and up and coming," she told PEOPLE exclusively in 2024. UNI XC SSP
