Eviction drive to continue: Assam CM

Guwahati, July 9 (UNI) Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma today asserted that the eviction drive which is being undertaken by his government will continue till all illegal encroachments are cleared so that the areas can be used for public welfare projects. Defending the eviction drive despite opposition criticism, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that some resistance was to be expected during an operation of such scale. Violence broke out during a massive eviction drive in Dhubri district yesterday.
The Dhubri district and police administration carried out an eviction drive at three villages under Chapar revenue circle and cleared approx 3500 bighas of land. However, the situation turned violent at Chapar as some of the encroachers opposed the eviction and there were reports of stone pelting on the police and other officials from the administration, which led to damage of two excavators. "Large swathes of land have been encroached upon by people from different places. We must clear those so that the areas can be used for projects for public good. This was done at Chapar in Dhubri on July 8. On July 10 there will be an eviction at Paikan in Goalpara district.
In Paikan it is a reserved forest and we must clear the encroachment from reserved forests," said the Chief Minister. Asked about his remarks on those opposing the eviction drives, the Chief Minister said that the government will do its job and that the others can do theirs. Congress Lok Sabha MP from Dhubr, Rakibul Hussain while condemning the eviction drive at Chapar termed it brutal and said that the government of Assam has violated even the orders by the Gauhati High court while carrying out the eviction drive.
