Five killed, over 70 injured as bus overturns at Orsa Ghat

Latehar, Jan 18 (UNI) Five passengers including four women were killed while more than 70 passengers were injured, several of them critically, when a passenger bus plyimg from Balrampur in Chhattisgarh to the famous tourist destination Lodh Falls, met with a major mishap on Sunday at Orsa Ghat in Latehar district of Jharkhand. The accident occurred after the bus reportedly suffered brake failure while descending a steep slope, causing it to overturn, police officials said.
According to officials, the bus became uncontrollable on the sharp descent of Orsa Ghat and overturned within moments, leading to chaos and panic at the spot. The bus has been identified as belonging to Gyan Ganga High School, Balrampur, bearing registration number CG-15 AB 0564. Eyewitnesses said that the bus was carrying passengers beyond its capacity.
Bus driver Vikas Pathak told authorities that he realised the brakes had failed while descending the ghat. He said attempts were made to control the vehicle using the handbrake and gears, and passengers were warned to remain alert, but the continuous slope made it impossible to regain control.
