HC Warns Top Civic Officials Over Air Pollution Directives or Face Stop Salary

Mumbai, Jan 23 (UNI) The Bombay High Court on Friday came down heavily on the Bombay Municipal Corporation (BMC) and the neighbouring Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) for failing to effectively implement air-pollution mitigation measures and also warned of stopping salaries of top civic officials for non-compliance.
During the hearing of a ''suo motu'' Public Interest Litigation (PIL) on the deteriorating air quality in Mumbai and its surrounding areas, a two-member bench said it found belligerent disregard and violation of its orders by NMMC and proposed to pass an order directing the Municipal Commissioner not to draw his salaries till this order permitted him to do so.
The bench of Chief Justice Shree Chandrashekahar and Justice Suman Shayam, however, said that it is not passing any immediate directions to stop the salaries and it was only a proposal at this stage.
