New Delhi, Dec 4 (UNI) India is on the verge of securing their first-ever semi-final berth at the Asian Women’s Handball Championship, with a crucial match against Japan on Friday that could also earn them a spot in the 2025 World Women’s Handball Championship in Germany and the Netherlands.
However, India’s hopes were slightly dented on Wednesday when they suffered a narrow 32-30 defeat to the Islamic Republic of Iran in their second Group B match at the 2024 Asian Championship, held at the Indira Gandhi Arena here.
Despite a heroic performance from goalkeeper Nina Shil, who was pivotal in repelling Iran’s relentless attacks, India could not hold on for the win. Shalini Thakur had given India an early lead with a brilliant finish, while Bhawana Sharma, Player of the Match in their victory over Hong Kong China, added a penalty goal shortly after to boost India’s chances.
