India targets 2.5 million tonnes of mariculture output by 2047: CMFRI

Kochi, Oct 11 (UNI) India is charting an ambitious course to meet its surging seafood demand, with the ICAR–Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) setting a target of 2.5 million tonnes of mariculture production by 2047, up from the current 1.5 lakh tonnes, a top official said today.
Announcing this at the institute headquarters here, CMFRI Director Dr. Grinson George described mariculture as the “next big revolution” in India’s marine fisheries sector, capable of transforming the nation’s coastal economy.
He was speaking after inaugurating a national-level training programme for fish farmers, marking the nationwide launch of the Central Government’s Pradhan Mantri Dhan Dhanya Krishi Yojana (PM DDKY).
