Karnataka bears majority cost as BJP cuts Metro project support

Bengaluru, Aug 10 (UNI) The BJP-led Central Government’s significant reduction in financial support for Bengaluru’s Yellow Line Metro project since coming to power has ignited a fresh political controversy, with Karnataka Minister Priyank Kharge today publicly accusing the Centre of neglecting the state and shifting the financial burden onto Karnataka’s shoulders.
Kharge pointed out that the ambitious Bengaluru Metro project was originally launched during the UPA government’s tenure under then-Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh. During the initial phase, the Central Government played a crucial role, contributing a substantial portion of the project’s funding, which was instrumental in setting the foundation for the metro’s development.
However, Kharge alleged that the BJP government, after assuming power at the Centre, drastically slashed its financial commitment in the subsequent phases of the project. This sharp withdrawal of support placed immense pressure on the Karnataka government, which had to step up and cover over ₹12,000 crores for critical components such as land acquisition and other ancillary expenses.
