Karnataka CM seeks urgent meeting with PM over sugarcane farmers' crisis

Bengaluru, Nov 6 (UNI) Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Friday has written a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking an urgent meeting to address the escalating crisis faced by sugarcane farmers across the state.
In his letter, the Chief Minister highlighted that ongoing protests in North Karnataka, particularly in Belagavi, Bagalkote, Vijayapura, Vijayanagara, Bidar, Gadag, Hubli-Dharwad, and Haveri districts, have intensified despite continuous efforts by the State Government to mediate between farmers and sugar mill owners.
Siddaramaiah drew attention to the Central Government’s Fair and Remunerative Price (FRP) for the 2025–26 season, fixed at Rs 3,550 per tonne (Rs 355 per quintal) at 10.25 per cent basic recovery. However, after mandatory H&T deductions of Rs 800–900 per tonne, farmers effectively receive only Rs 2,600–3,000 per tonne, rendering sugarcane cultivation increasingly unviable amid rising costs of fertilizer, labour, irrigation, and transport.
