Karnataka takes step to end Devadasi exploitation

Bengaluru, Aug 13 (UNI) In a historic legislative move, the Karnataka government today introduced the Karnataka Devadasi (Prevention, Prohibition, Relief and Rehabilitation) Bill in the state Assembly, aiming to eradicate the centuries-old practice of Devadasi exploitation.
The bill seeks to empower victims, provide social and economic rehabilitation, and secure legal and inheritance rights for children born to Devadasis.
A key feature of the bill allows children born to Devadasis to identify and verify their fathers, with appeals possible through taluk committees or District Courts via biochemical tests including DNA. Free legal aid is also provided to support children in asserting their rights, ensuring their legitimacy and inheritance entitlements from both parents.
