Kerala's dog bite crisis spirals into major public health challenge

Thiruvananthapuram, Aug 14 (UNI) Kerala's dog bite crisis is spiralling into a serious public health challenge, driven by rapidly rising stray dog population and inadequate control measures.
“The recent Supreme Court ruling on stray dogs in Delhi seems to have touched a raw nerve in Kerala. The verdict is being seen as a welcome step to curb the menace, as India continues to be labelled the 'global capital' for stray dog bites and rabies fatalities,” said Dr. Naresh Purohit, Advisor to the National Communicable Disease Control Programme.
Sharing insights on the issue, noted epidemiologist Dr Purohit, in his investigative scientific report, pointed out that as per the 2019 Livestock Census, India is home to an estimated 15 crore stray dogs.
