Krishnaiah to launch Satyagraha Deeksha on Aug 25, demanding 42 per cent BC reservation

Hyderabad, Aug 14 (UNI) Rajya Sabha Member and BC Welfare Association National President R. Krishnaiah has announced that he will stage a Satyagraha Deeksha at Indira Park, Hyderabad, on August 25 to press for 42 per cent reservations for Backward Classes in local bodies.
Addressing a meeting of 14 BC associations chaired by BC Welfare Association National Vice President Gujja Satyam on Thursday, Krishnaiah demanded that the state government implement 42 per cent BC reservations in the upcoming local body polls without delay. He urged the Congress government to exercise its constitutional powers instead of shifting responsibility to the Centre.
Citing Article 246 of the Constitution, Krishnaiah said the state has the authority to enhance BC reservations in local bodies through an Act passed by the Assembly, which could withstand legal scrutiny in the Supreme Court, given the availability of population census and empirical data. He noted that the 50 per cent reservation ceiling had been lifted in the EWS case and in certain earlier rulings.
