Hyderabad, Aug 9 (UNI) BRS Working President K T Rama Rao (KTR) criticized the Telangana Congress Government for allegedly spreading false propaganda about the Sunkisala project.
It may be noted here that the retaining wall of the Sunkisala project, part of the Nagarjuna Sagar dam across the Krishna River in Nalgonda, collapsed on August 1. While no casualties were reported, the incident has sparked controversy. The project, with a foundation stone laid on May 14, 2022, was initially contracted to Megha Engineering Works at Rs 1,450 crore, later escalating to Rs 2,215 crore. The project includes the construction of an intake well, three pump houses, tunnels, and a pump house superstructure.
Speaking to the media at Telangana Bhavan on Friday, KTR emphasized that the Sunkisala project was undertaken to address Hyderabad's drinking water needs, especially during periods of low water levels in Nagarjuna Sagar. He stated that the project would also benefit surrounding villages by ensuring a steady water supply.
According to KTR, even in the unlikely event that water from the Krishna River is unavailable, the project is built to withstand water shortages for up to four years. He asserted that his administration has prepared for the water requirements of Hyderabad for the ensuing fifty years.
KTR questioned the Congress Government's handling of the incident, asking why they failed to inform the public about the collapse or whether they attempted to cover it up. He criticized the government for what he described as a hasty and mismanaged project, leading to the wall's collapse. KTR demanded that the construction agency be blacklisted and called for a judicial probe into the incident.
He also announced that a BRS delegation, along with retired engineers, would inspect the Sunkisala project to assess the situation.
