Siliguri, Jul 30 (UNI) Landlocked Sikkim, Kalimpong district of West Bengal and parts of Darjeeling have been cut off from the rest of the country after a series of landslides triggered by heavy monsoon rains blocked the highway and killed migrant labour and two others went missing, official sources said.
The middle-aged contract labour, who was engaged in a night shift duty on the Sevoke-Rangpo Railway project near Rangpo in Kalimpong district was killed when mudslides and boulders fell on the makes camp in the night.
Two other labourers, who were also in the camp, were missing as the rescue operations were affected due to rains.
Three other labourers sustained wounds and were taken to a hospital at Singtam, sources said.
The series of landslides and falling boulders blocked the NH 10 cutting off the main artery of landlocked Sikkim, Kalimpong district and parts of Darjeeling in West Bengal.
Efforts were to clear the debris on the highway as the fleet of vehicles, including trucks carrying essentials, were lined up on both ways of the traffic.
