Let us not forget sacrifices of freedom fighters: Manipur Governor

Imphal, Aug 15 (UNI) Manipur Governor AK Bhalla paid rich tributes to the great freedom fighters who sacrificed their lives to win freedom and remembered their efforts to build India.
Addressing the Independence Day celebration here today at 1st Manipur Rifles parade ground, the Governor said the past struggles of our forefathers should be remembered because these led to a free, united and democratic India.
The collective effort of the non-violence movement launched by Mahatma Gandhi and the armed resistance movement of Subhas Chandra Bose led to the freedom of the country, he added.
The Governor paid tributes to the people of Manipur who fought against the British to achieve their freedom. The great Anglo Manipur War of 1891 is a testament of the people’s fight for freedom. He further paid respect and lauded the courage of women of Manipur who launched two great movements known as First Nupi Lal ( Women’s War) in 1904 and second Nupi Lal of 1939. "Women fought all odds, their courage etched in our heart as symbols of sacrifice", he added.
Bhalla said people should reconcile their differences, adding progress is already seen in government activities related to social welfare and economic empowerment.
"The government is ensuring peaceful farming activities and Manipur has not seen any cases of violent death in recent months," said the Governor, adding essential items are brought in through national highways.
On security front, he said over 3,000 arms have been recovered and over 400 extortion-related arrests have been made. Looted arms have come back and the government is also taking up border fencing work, and is actively fighting drug menace.
The Governor also inspected a guard of honour and presented awards to police personnel. Cultural performances by four different groups were also presented during the celebrations.
The celebrations were attended by former chief minister N Biren Singh.
