Loved acting, not medium: veteran actor Pankaj Kapur

Nagpur, Apr 11 (UNI) Veteran actor Pankaj Kapur today noted that while theatre, television and cinema are different mediums, the essence of acting remains unchanged, saying that his love has always been for acting rather than the medium itself.
Speaking at an interaction organised by the Nagpur edition of PIFF and Meraki Theatres at Vanamati Auditorium here, Pankaj Kapur shared insights from his five-decade-long journey in the performing arts.
The session was conducted by anchor Ajey Gampawar, during which the actor spoke candidly about his experiences.
Earlier, Pankaj Kapur was felicitated by Vidarbha Sahitya Sangh President Dr. Girish Gandhi and former Divisional Commissioner Anoop Kumar.
A documentary highlighting his 50-year career in acting was also screened on the occasion.
Emphasising the importance of discipline in the craft, he said that acting cannot be mastered merely by making social media reels. “Education, consistency and hard work are essential,” he said, pointing that his training at the National School of Drama played a crucial role in shaping his artistic sensibilities.
He also described cinema as a blend of art and commerce.
Recalling his early years in Ludhiana, Pankaj Kapur said his father’s advice, “return only after winning” , became a guiding principle in his life.
He noted that his exposure to theatre, poetry and languages like Urdu and Awadhi during his time at the National School of Drama had a lasting impact on his work.
Guiding young aspirants, he stressed the need for reading, continuous practice and patience, stating that success in acting requires sustained effort.
He also urged parents to support their children’s interests.
Despite gaining immense popularity and becoming one of the highest-paid television actors for shows like “Karamchand” and “Office Office,” Pankaj Kapur said he was not particularly fond of his role in “Karamchand” and also expressed reservations about his performance in “Ruka Hua Faisla”, saying he felt he could have portrayed them better.
Speaking about his son Shahid Kapoor, he described him as an excellent actor who constantly seeks to evolve. “It is not easy to work with him. The courage he shows in selecting roles at a young age is commendable,” he said.
Referring to his directorial venture “Mausam,” starring Shahid Kapoor, Pankaj Kapur said the film brought him creative satisfaction though it did not meet commercial expectations.
Praising Nagpur audiences, he added they possess a keen sense of understanding and cultural awareness. The session concluded with the actor reciting a poem, earning appreciation from the audience.
