Paris, June 2 (UNI) In the biggest upset of the French Open women’s draw so far, Elise Mertens crushed third seed Jessica Pegula with a 6-1 6-3 third-round victory here on Friday.
The American was outclassed by Mertens on Court Philippe-Chatrier even though she was pegged as favourite after reaching the quarter-finals in four of the last five Grand Slams, including last year at Roland-Garros.
Mertens, seeded 28th in Paris, sketched her best-ever performance at Roland-Garros with storming to the fourth round where she will face Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova or Anastasia Potapova.
