Paris, Dec 1 (UNI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi called upon the world nations to turn to the clean energy of Sun for their power needs.
Launching the International Solar Alliance (ISA), along with French President Francois Hollande on the margins of the UN Climate Change Summit here, Mr Modi said ''Yesterday, when the energy sources and the excesses of Our industrial age have endangered our planet, we must turn to Sun to power our future.''
As many as 122 countries lying between the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn have been invited to join the ISA, including many African and Asian nations, Australia, New Zealand, Brazil, France, China and the United States.
Prime Minister Modi estimated that 100 billion dollar will be needed per year by 2020 to finance the clean power initiative. India will support the operations for five years, he assured.
Earlier, speaking at the Innovation council, Mr Modi said, ''We must speak about goals and targets on carbon emissions and rise in global temperature. But, it is just as important to focus on the instruments that will make it natural and easy for the world to get there.''
''We have to ensure, in the spirit of climate justice, that the life of a few does not crowd out the opportunities for the many still on the initial steps of development ladder. The advanced countries must leave enough room for developing countries to grow. And, we must strive for a lighter carbon footprint on our growth path.
''For that, we must come together in a partnership to bring clean energy within the reach of all. Innovation is vital for combating climate change and ensuring climate justice,'' he added yesterday.
