Neeraj Ghaywan thanks Martin Scorsese for guiding ‘Homebound’

Washington, Nov 16 (UNI) Indian filmmaker Neeraj Ghaywan has expressed gratitude to legendary director Martin Scorsese for offering what he calls a “gentle guiding hand” in shaping his latest film, Homebound, according to Deadline.
Speaking during his film’s panel at Deadline’s Contenders Film: Los Angeles, Ghaywan said Scorsese, who serves as the film’s executive producer and mentor, played a crucial role in helping him find clarity while telling a story rooted in India’s caste realities.
Homebound stars Ishaan Khatter and Vishal Jethwa, who also attended the event.
“Scorsese started out with reading the script, and he told me how to go about it,” Ghaywan told Deadline. “We did a back-and-forth, and then again at the end stage he saw the first cut … he would guide with every step. I had to have the focus, so he gave me that focus. He gave life to all of our stories.”
Ghaywan explained that the film marks his return to feature filmmaking nearly a decade after Masaan. He said he was deeply moved by the true events described in an op-ed in The New York Times, which inspired Homebound.
“It was a story of friendship and what happened to these friends during the journey in the pandemic,” he said, noting that the narrative provided a foundation for exploring broader global issues such as migration, displacement and the emotional forces that push people away from their homes.
He added that the film aims to “humanize the experiences of marginalized communities” and move beyond portraying them as “statistics and abstraction,” emphasizing the need to show their pain, resilience and humanity.
Ghaywan also highlighted the importance of depicting joy and everyday life: “I wanted to dismantle the victimhood of marginalized communities … They have humor, they have good food and all of those things that make them human. It was essential to bring that in.”
