Netherlands replace Timber with Geertruida for FIFA WC

Zurich, June 9 (UNI) The Netherlands have made a late change to their squad for the FIFA World Cup 2026, with defender Lutsharel Geertruida replacing injured Jurrien Timber, head coach Ronald Koeman confirmed.
Timber, who plays for Arsenal, has been ruled out after failing to recover sufficiently from a groin injury that has troubled him since March. Although he recently featured as a substitute in the UEFA Champions League final, the Royal Netherlands Football Association (KNVB) said the 24-year-old “has not recovered sufficiently from a groin injury to take part in the World Cup in a medically responsible manner.”
Geertruida, who plays for Sunderland, had been part of the provisional group and was involved until the Netherlands’ recent 1-0 friendly defeat to Algeria. He will now rejoin the final squad ahead of their tournament opener against Japan on June 14.
