Newly built modern & energy efficient Coke Oven Battery inaugurated in RSP

Bhubaneswar, Nov 17 (UNI) In a significant way the rebuilt Coke Oven Battery No. 2 of the Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP)was inaugurated , marking a key achievement in the plant’s journey of modernization and technological advancement.
The inauguration ceremony was graced by Director In-Charge, RSP, Atanu Bhowmick, who unveiled the state-of-the-art facility on Friday last.
The event witnessed participation from a large number of executives and employees, reflecting the collective pride of Team RSP.
The newly rebuilt Coke Oven Battery No. 2 is a modern, energy-efficient, and environmentally friendly facility constructed on the site of the old battery.
It comprises 70 ovens divided into 2 blocks, with a maximum capacity of 93 pushes per day after stabilization.
The facility will have a dry coal throughput of 0.53 Mtpa and produce 0.363 Mtpa of BF grade coke, ensuring seamless coke supply for hot metal production.
Designed with advanced technology, the project integrates sustainability with operational excellence.
One of the key challenges of the project was its execution as a brownfield initiative.
The construction was carried out seamlessly without disrupting production in adjoining areas. The project involved the use of approximately 13,000 tons of refractory bricks, with the main structures supported by robust anchorage systems.
Other key features of the facility include installation of advanced environmental conservation equipment, such as an on-man charging system, double gas collecting main, grit arrestor, vapor spray system in the quenching tower, dust suppression system in the guide car, and a hydro-jet door cleaning system.
These measures significantly reduce pollution and enhance the workplace environment, RSP sources said.
Speaking on the occasion, Bhowmick commended the tams involved in the project for their dedication and expertise.
He stated, “This project underscores RSP’s commitment to adopting cutting-edge technology while maintaining our focus on energy efficiency and environmental sustainability.
The commissioning of the rebuilt battery is expected to further enhance RSP's production capabilities while adhering to stringent environmental norms.
