Former SC Green Judge  Kuldip Singh passes away at 92

New Delhi, Nov 26 (UNI) Former Supreme Court Judge Justice Kuldip Singh, 92, known for his landmark environmental judgments passed away in Chandigarh.
He served as a judge of the Supreme Court for eight years from December 14, 1988 to December 21, 1996.
Justice Kuldip Singh known as 'Green Judge' is known for his contributions to the field of environmental law.
He brought a revolution in the domain of Environmental law and presided over the bench which handled the MC Mehta case in which several orders were passed to deal with air pollution in Delhi.
The former SC Judge, who died on Monday evening, introduced various concepts such as sustainable development, intergenerational equity, polluters pay principle etc.
Justice Kuldip Singh also passed orders to protect the Taj Mahal from industrial pollution and restricted the activities in the Taj Trapezium zone.
After retirement as the Supreme Court judge, Justice Singh headed the Delimitation Commission in 2002 on the readjustment of territorial constituencies for the Lok Sabha and state assemblies.
He was born on January 1, 1932, in Jhelum in present-day Pakistan. He completed his legal education in England and was called a Barrister-at-Law at the Lincoln Inn, London.
Justice Kuldip Singh enrolled as an advocate in 1959 and was appointed the Advocate General of Punjab in 1987.
His cremation will take place in Chandigarh at 3 PM on Tuesday.
His Son Senior Advocate P S Patwalia is practicing in the Supreme Court.
