Pranab leaves for China on first state visit
New Delhi, May 24 (UNI) President Pranab Mukherjee today left for four-day visit to China where he will hold discussions with all aspects of bilateral relations with the Chinese leadership. The President, who is paying his visit to China, will first land in Guangzhou, one of the most important industrial town of China, in the first leg of his visit. Mr Mukherjee will reach Beijing tomorrow on the second leg of his visit. He will hold talks with his counterpart Xi Jinping, during which a wide range of issues relating to the regional and international situation in addition to bilateral matters would come up for discussion. Besides the boundary issue, the recent Chinese move to block UN ban on JeM chief Jaish-e-Mohammad, and its insistence on India signing NPT to get NSG membership are also expected to be taken up by the President during his talks. In an interview to Xinhua news agency on the eve of his visit to China, the President had said, ‘’We seek a fair, reasonable and mutually acceptable settlement of the boundary question and, pending the boundary settlement, to maintain peace and tranquility in the border areas. Both sides should strive to ensure that the outstanding issues are addressed in a manner that demonstrates mutual sensitivity to each others concerns, interests and aspiration.’’ He had stressed that India would like to expand and diversify their engagement with China across various fields while proactively addressing outstanding issues including the boundary question. The last Presidential visit from India to China was in May 2000. President Xi Jin Ping has visited India in September 2014. A key highlight of Mr Mukherjee’s engagement in Beijing will be the Round Table of Vice Chancellors and Presidents of Universities of India and China. It is the first time that such a round table is being organized as a part of a State visit to China. A number of MoUs in the academic field are proposed to be signed between the academic institutions of two countries. ‘’ Given the young population of India and zeal for knowledge of Indian and Chinese people, these academic linkages will be mutually beneficial,’’ Joint Secretary East Asia Pradeep Rawat said here. During his visit, Mr Mukherjee will be addressing a business gathering in Guangzhou. He will share his thoughts with the Indian community again in Guangzhou. He will connect with Friends of India, a committed group of cultural and academic personalities in Beijing and will speak to young, dynamic, and talented Chinese students of Beijing University and through them to Chinese people. The President will return on May 27. UNI NAZ PR ADG 1355
