Rainfall, thunderstorms expected over Northwest India till Feb 21: IMD

New Delhi, Feb 19 (UNI) India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday predicted rainfall accompanied by hailstorms, thunderstorms and lightning along with winds gusting to 60 Kmph over the Western Himalayan Region and the plains of Northwest India from February 19 to 21.
According to IMD, fairly widespread light to moderate rainfall and snowfall along with thunderstorms and lightning very likely over the Western Himalayan Region from February 19 to 21 under the influence of two western disturbances.
“A trough in middle tropospheric westerlies and a cyclonic circulation lies over north Pakistan and neighbourhood in lower levels are likely to merge by the evening today. In addition, there is high moisture feeding from the Arabian Sea over northwest India. Under this influence, heavy rainfall and snowfall is very likely at isolated places over Jammu, Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit, Baltistan, Muzaffarabad and Himachal Pradesh on February 19 and 20 and over Uttarakhand on February 19,” the IMD said.
Parts of Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh are expected to witness hailstorms on February 19 and 20, and West Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan on February 19.
Scattered to fairly widespread light and moderate rainfall is very likely over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, West Uttar Pradesh, East Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan till February 21 and over northwest Madhya Pradesh during February 20-23, the IMD said.
The MeT department further predicted a partly cloudy sky with strong surface winds accompanied by winds gusting to 50 kmph likely over Delhi on February 19. Generally cloudy sky with very light rain and thundershowers at a few places on February 20 and partly cloudy sky with possibility of very light rain and drizzle on February 21, it said.
Isolated thunderstorms and lightning along with winds gusting to 60 kmph are very likely to prevail over Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, West Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and East Uttar Pradesh during February 19 and 22.
Hailstorm activity is very likely at isolated places over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, West Uttar Pradesh and north Rajasthan on February 19 and 20, the IMD added.
