PM returns home amid war of words between Congress-BJP

New Delhi, Apr 18 (UNI) Mr Narendra Modi returned here this morning from his three-nation tour of France, Germany and Canada amid a fierce war of words between the Congress party and the BJP over the Prime Minister’s veiled attack on the previous UPA regime in his addresses during his overseas trip. Delhi BJP chief Satish Upadhyay, BJP MPs Meenakshi Lekhi and Vijay Goel and several other party leaders were present at the technical Air Force base at Palam to welcome the Prime Minister. During Mr Modi’s visit, several important agreements, including the Rafale deal and a nuclear energy accord with France, were signed. A landmark accord was inked with Canada under which it will supply 3,175 metric tonnes of uranium over five years to India for its nuclear reactors, thus capping negotiations on safeguards that started five years ago. The Prime Minister and entourage made a brief stopover in Frankfurt for refueling of the special Air India aircraft before heading for New Delhi from Vancouver. "A special thanks to @pmharper - a fine host, a wonderful human being and a very dear friend," Modi had tweeted before his departure from Vancouver yesterday. "I leave Canada with immense satisfaction. This visit will further enhance India-Canada ties. A big thanks to the people of Canada," he said in another tweet before heading home. The Canada print media extensively covered Mr Modi’s visit to Canada with several newspapers carrying editorials on the agreements signed between the two countries. However, the Congress yesterday reacted sharply to Mr Modi’s jibes against the UPA government in his remarks made at public functions in Canada. The party has decided that its spokespersons would trail Mr Modi on his foreign trips and counter his ‘propaganda’ against the previous regime. However, the BJP has questioned the Congress's decision, saying such a move only reflected that the Opposition party was frustrated. The focus of Mr Modi during his trip was on attracting investments and technology for development of India through the 'Make in India' initiative. UNI AU AT RSA 1341
