Kejriwal defends hike in MLA’s salary

Ponda, Goa, Jun 29 (UNI) Aam Aadmi Party National Convener and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal today defended hike in the salary of his MLAs saying it was required because they were getting very less. Speaking at Goa Dialogues with youth here, he said,’’ the MLAs were getting Rs 12,000 per month which is almost equal to minimum wages which is Rs 9,000. We have increased the amount to Rs 50,000 which I assume is not a higher salary from any stretch of imagination. Since the amount was so low that I had to take the decision but it is being said that it is 400 per cent increase. Besides that I have allowed some reimbursement to be done for touring in the constituency, keeping an assistance, telephone bills etc. But it is being tom-tomed. But you will be surprised that even a councilor of Delhi Municipal Corporation maintains expensive cars like Mudi or Mercedez while they get only Rs 3,000. How it is possible to maintain expensive cars on a salary of Rs 3,000. So obviously we have developed a system where we say that we would not give good salary to the councilor, he can make money from wherever he wants. But we want to have a transparent system. I have deployed persons behind all our MLAs to ensure that they do not indulge in corruption.'' Stating that he cannot tolerate corruption, he said he had sacked one minister from his cabinet against whom he had found evidence of demanding bribe from a businessman for doing an official favour. The Delhi Chief Minister held Goa Dialogue with youth here which is a preparatory process for drafting the Aam Aadmi Party's election manifesto for assembly polls to be held in early 2017.
