LS Members express concern over communal violence

New Delhi, Dec 1 (UNI) Members in the Lok Sabha today expressed concern over the increase in number of incidents of communal violence although the government asserted that communal riots have showed a declining trend during the current year. Replying to queries of Members during Question Hour, Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju refuted the version of Leader of Congress M Mallikarjun Kharge, Rabindra Jena(BJD) and others. He asserted that the number of communal incidents have receded substantially now compared to year 2013. He said only four communal riots of larger manifestation took place this year. Mr Jena said there was 12 per cent rise in communal violence this year so far as compared to the previous year. Mr Kharge, Prof Saugata Roy(AITC) and even BJP's Yogi Adityanath also said the number of violence have shown a rise. The BJP Member, however, tried to target Samajwadi Party-led government in Uttar Pradesh, saying that the highest number of such violent cases were reported in that state. He said last year, 133 incidents took place in the state while this year till October, 139 communal incidents have been reported. Mr Kharge alleged that such incidents were reported only from those states where BJP presence was substantial and influential. Mr Yogi demanded constitution of a high-powered committee to look into all incidents of communal violence to expose the people and forces behind the violence. Sushmita Dev(Cong) took a dig over Home Minister Rajnath Singh's bid of coining new phrase 'panth nirpekshyata' (secular) during a debate in the House last week, and wanted to know whether the government was amending the definition of communal riots to accommodate the new phrase 'panth nirpekshyata'. However, Mr Rijiju negated that, adding that no such move was under consideration of the government. Ms Dev said a government panel has names of leaders of Samajwadi Party and also BJP as accused in the Muzaffarnagar riots, asking 'What steps the government has taken in this regard ?' Mr Rijiju said, "The Centre can take steps, if required, only after going through the report, we have not received that report so far.' UNI SS RSA GC1231
