Masarat on 7-day police remand, Geelani, others under house arrest

Srinagar, Apr 18 (UNI) Separatist leader Masarat Alam was sent to seven days police remand by a local court in central Kashmir district of Badgam while chairman of hardliner Hurriyat Conference (HC) Syed Ali Shah Geelani remained under house arrest since April 16. A number of other separatist leaders have also been put under house arrest to prevent any law and order problem following a strike call given by the HC today in protest against the Tral killing. An official spokesman said that Masarat was arrested yesterday under Unlawful Activities Prevention Act for raising anti India slogans and hoisting Pakistan flags during a rally at Hyderpora in the city outskirts, where Geelani addressed his supporters on his return from New Delhi on April 15. A case was registered against Geelani, Masarat and other separatist leaders in police station Humhama in the Badgam district. Initially, Geelani and Masarat and other separatist leaders were put under house arrest on April 16 evening following “ Tral Chalo” call by the HC to protest against the killing of two youths allegedly by Army in a fake encounter on April 13 in Kamla forest. Following sharp reaction from the Centre, Congress and other parties, Masarat was finally arrested from his old city area yesterday after video of the Geelani’s rally proved that he (Masarat) was involved in anti national activities. Later, Masarat was produced before a local court in Badgam and he was remanded to seven days police remand till April 23. He was lodged in police station Humhama. Masarat hit headlines in 2010 mass protests when he was issuing weekly protest calendars in the Kashmir valley. About 120 people, mostly youths, were killed in alleged security forces firing and property worth millions of rupees had been damaged in the violence and hundreds of security forces and state police personnel were injured. He was arrested from Tailbal area in the city outskirts and booked under Public Safety Act (PSA) till he was finally released after the new coalition government of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and BJP took over in the state. Though PSA against him was quashed a number of times, he was rearrested each time. His release by the Mufti Mohammed Sayeed government evoked sharp criticism from the Centre, Congress, National Conference (NC) and other saffron parties. Meanwhile, Geelani and a number of other separatist leaders remained under house arrest. UNI BAS RSA 0908
