Chennai, Nov 27 (UNI) In a tragic incident, five women were mowed down
by a speeding car on the East Coast Road (ECR) near Mamallapuram,
about 50 km from here, on Wednesday.
Police said all the five suffered serious injuries and died on the spot.
The car was on its way from Tiruporur to Mamallapuram, when the driver
lost control, and ploughed into a group of women who were sitting on the
roadside while grazing their cattle.
All the five victims were women and the accident occurred at 2.20 p.m.
at Payanu-Madura Pandithamedu junction.
All the victims hail from the Payanur village and they were identified as
Aandhayi (71), Logammal (56), Yasodha (54),Vijaya (53) and Gowri (52).
Police rushed to the spot and removed the bodies to Government Hospital
for post mortem.
Meanwhile, expressing deep anguish and grief, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister
M K Stalin condoled their deaths and announced a solatium of Rs two lakh
each to their families.
Expressing shock over the mishap, Mr Stalin, in a statement here, said he
was pained to hear about the tragic accident in which five women were
killed on the spot and announced the solatium from the Chief Minister's
Public Relief Fund.
