Bengaluru, April 29 (UNI) The political climate in Karnataka has reached a boiling point as the Congress party spearheads protests across the state, leveling accusations against the BJP for allegedly assisting the escape of accused MP Prajwal Revanna amidst allegations of sexual violence.
The protests, orchestrated by Congress workers and prominently featuring women members, unfolded in various cities including Hubballi, Hassan, and Bengaluru. The demonstrations demanded swift action against Prajwal Revanna, the 33-year-old grandson of Janata Dal-Secular Chief and former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda, in light of the grave accusations.
In a swift retaliation, Karnataka Minister Priyank Kharge on Monday implicated the BJP in aiding Prajwal's evasion from authorities amid an alleged obscenity video case. "By all indications, the BJP played a pivotal role in his escape from the country. How exactly did he manage to leave? Who enabled his departure? I hold the BJP squarely responsible for this," he declared, escalating tensions within the political landscape.
The situation intensified with Congress' media and publicity department head, Pawan Khera, unveiling a letter purportedly containing incriminating videos featuring Revanna. Khera criticized the BJP's continued alliance with Revanna despite awareness of the allegations and questioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi's association with the accused during election campaigns.
In Bengaluru, protests led by All India Mahila Congress President Alka Lamba outside the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee's office denounced the "horrifying case of sexual violence" allegedly involving Revanna.
Lamba echoed the sentiments of many, expressing solidarity with the victims and demanding justice.
Amidst the mounting pressure, the Congress government in Karnataka took a significant step by forming a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the allegations against Prajwal Revanna. The decision followed the emergence of explicit video clips allegedly involving him, signaling the government's commitment to addressing the issue promptly.
Led by Additional Director General of Police (CID) Bijay Kumar Singh, the SIT comprises three IPS officers tasked with expeditiously completing the investigation. This move underscores the government's resolve to ensure accountability and justice for the victims while holding the accused accountable.
As the investigation unfolds, the political fallout from the allegations against Prajwal Revanna continues to cast a shadow over Karnataka's political landscape, emphasizing the urgent need for transparency and accountability in addressing such serious allegations.
