CBI Court sentences two Hyderabad postal assistants to two years RI for Rs 27.27 lakh misappropriation during demonetisation

Hyderabad, Dec 2 (UNI) A CBI Court in Hyderabad has sentenced two postal assistants to two years of rigorous imprisonment, along with a fine of Rs 65,000 each, for misappropriating Rs 27.27 lakh during the 2016 demonetisation period.
The convicted officials — Adapa Srinivas, then Postal Assistant (Treasurer), and U Rajyalakshmi, then Postal Assistant at the Humayun Nagar Sub-Post Office — were found guilty of fraudulently exchanging Withdrawn Old Series currency notes of Rs 500 and RS 1,000 with new currency worth Rs 27,27,397 between November 10 and November 24, 2016.
The case was registered by the Central Bureau of Investigation on August 31, 2017, following a written complaint from the Senior Superintendent of Post Offices, Hyderabad City Division. The CBI investigation revealed that the two officials entered into a criminal conspiracy, exchanged old notes without obtaining mandatory Annexure-II forms, and falsified official records to conceal the misappropriation.
