Lighting deepam at stone pillar atop Thiruparankundram hillock near Dargah: Madras HC dismisses TN Govt appeal

Chennai, Dec 4 (UNI) In a setback for the DMK government of MK Stalin, a Division Bench of Madurai Bench of Madras High Court on Thursday dismissed the appeal by the state challenging the order of a single Judge, passed on a contempt petition, allowing devotees of the Thirparankundram Murugan temple to light the Karthigai deepam at the stone pillar atop the hillock close to the Sikkandar darga on Wednesday evening.
However, the order passed by Justice GR Swaminathan, permitting the right-wing petitioners with CISF security was not complied with following the Madurai District administration has clamped prohibitory orders under section 144 and the police prevented a mob which breached barricades and proceeded to the hill top.
In the ensuing clash, two policemen were injured.
