State can fix cane prices, not just blame Centre: Siddaramaiah

Bengaluru, Nov 8 (UNI) Former Chief Minister and BJP MP Basavaraj Bommai today said that the state government has full authority under the State Advised Price (SAP) Act to fix sugarcane prices, a power which, if exercised, could bring a fair and lawful resolution to the ongoing price dispute.
In a statement on X, Bommai recalled that the BJP government had enacted the SAP law to ensure fair pricing for sugarcane. The law empowers the state government to determine the price based on factors such as cultivation costs, sugar production, by-products, market price, and profit-sharing between farmers and factory owners. "So far, the government has not exercised these powers. If the Chief Minister acts now, justice can be delivered to farmers," he said.
Bommai highlighted the contrast in action at the district level, citing Belagavi Deputy Commissioner's meeting with sugar factory owners, which resulted in an increase of sugarcane prices from Rs 2,900 to Rs 3,200 per ton, earning farmers’ goodwill.
