TN CM Stalin, political party leaders hails SC order on Jallikattu

Chennai, May 18 (UNI) Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK President
M.K.Stalin and leaders of various political parties today hailed the Supreme
Court verdict upholding the laws to conduct the traditional Jallikattu--bull
taming sport.
In a tweet, Mr Stalin said this should be etched in golden words in Tamil
Nadu's history.
The verdict delivered by the Constitutional Bench Supreme Court that there
was no ban in conducting Jallikattu events that symbolises the, valour, courage
and tradition of Tamils, should be etched in Golden words.
"It's a major victory for the legal battle waged by the Tamil Nadu government
to uphold the Ordinance promulgated by the government", he said.
Mr Stalin said a massive Jallikattu arena to conduct the spot
during the traditional Pongal festival at the world famous
Alanganallur was being constructed and the Jallikattu victory
celebrations during the Pongal festival.
Leaders of various political parties, including ousted AIADMK
leader O.Panneerselvam, who was instrumental in bringing the
Ordinance in 2017 when he was the Chief Minister in the wake
of the Marina uprising, AIADMK General Secretary and Leader
of the Opposition Edappadi K.Palaniswami, BJP State Unit Chief
K.Annamalai, PMK Founder Dr S.Ramadoss, PMK President and
Rajya Sabha MP Dr Anbumani Ramadoss, ruling DMk's allies, the
Congress, MDMK and other parties also welcomed the Supreme
Court order.
In a detailed tweet, Mr Annamalai said "On behalf of @BJP4Tamil
Nadu & the people of Tamil Nadu, we thank our Hon PM Thiru
@narendramodi avl for his persistent effort to ensure the ban
on the Cultural sport of TN, Jallikattu was lifted in its entirety."
The Supreme Court today dismissed a batch of petitions that
challenged the constitutionality of the law that permitted
Jallikattu,he said.
"On the 11th of July 2011, the former Environmental Minister
of the UPA government, Thiru @Jairam_Ramesh avl, introduced
a notification which banned Jallikattu", he said.
"Later in May 2014, when the Supreme Court upheld the ban on
Jallikattu, Thiru @Jairam_Ramesh welcomed the judgement and
said this ended the “Barbaric Sport”. In December 2015, the
former PM & then the Member of the Rajya Sabha, Thiru Manmohan
Singh avl responding to a letter from the Humane Society,
called for discouraging bullfights", Mr Annamalai recalled.
"In January 2016, the NDA government, under the leadership
of our Hon PM Thiru @narendramodi avl, published a gazette
notification allowing Jallikattu; however, the Supreme Court
stayed the government order enabling the continuation of the
ban", he added.
"Hon FM Smt @nsitharaman avl, after the Stay of government
order in SC, requested the State government of Tamil Nadu
to pass an ordinance. The same was done after much persuasion
& deliberation in January 2017", he pointed out.
"In May 2016, @INCTamilNadu in their election manifesto said
that the party would ban Jallikattu in its entirety in Tamil
Nadu if voted to power. Such was the hate the Congress party
had for the culture of Tamil Nadu & today, along with the DMK,
they seem to be on a mission to erase these misdeeds", the BJP
State Chief said.
"In December 2022, appearing in the case on behalf of the Central
government in support of Jallikattu, the Solicitor General, Thiru
Tushar Mehta avl said that the presidential assent to the ordinance
was backed with necessary documents & every single aspect of the
case was presented", he noted.
"At this juncture, we also wish to share that Smt. Sowmya Reddy
from the Congress party was one of the petitioners calling for
the Ban on Jallikattu, but was recently defeated by BJP Candidate
Thiru CK Ramamurthy avl in the Jayanagar constituency in the
Karnataka assembly elections", Mr Annamalai said.
"If there was anyone who stood for Jallikattu from the beginning
to now, it was our Hon PM Thiru @narendramodi avl", he added.
