Chennai, Dec 1 (UNI) As heavy rains in view of Cyclone Fengal lashed
Chennai and neighbouring districts, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin
on Sunday said the city was neither spared, nor floated as the ruling
DMK hd put in place adequate flood control measures.
Talking to reporters after talking to Collectors of various Cyclone-hit districts
through video conferencing from the State Emergency Operations Centre
in the city and after visiting his Assembly constituency Kolathur, where he
inspected the relief works and distributed welfare assistance, he said rains
pounded the city and its suburbs and it was unexpected as a staggering
and an unprecedended 50 cms of rains was recorded in northern Villuppuram
district.
He said the Chennai city, which recorded 11 cms of rain yesterday, was
not spared by the Cyclone fury, nor there was any major flooding due to
precautionary measures made by the government, while dismissing
the main Opposition AIADMK's charge citing water stagnation in several
areas and picking holes in handling the flood and disaster management.
On the record rains Villupuram, which received unprecedented showers
not seen in the last few decades, Mr Stalin said it was difficult to predict
the Cyclone trajectory as the government followed the weather report and
the inputs from the IMD.
Stating that it was quite natural that there would be waterlogging in view
of heavy rains, Mr Stalin, referring to water stagnation in several parts of
the city, said once the rains receded the stagnation would recede.
Noting that there was nor major flooding in the city, Mr Stalin said the State
government is working to find a permanent solution to prevent inundation
in the city.
